Grade 7 Science

I’m using Remind for important updates. It’s free and safe to use, and you can get messages by text, app, or email. You can join three ways! 1. Text @lmellon to the number (289) 806-1188 OR 2. Go to www.remind.com/join/lmellon
OR 3. Scan barcode in room 103 with your cell phone or ipad.

Welcome to Grade 7 Science class.  Here you will find all of the information you will need to get through this year.  I will be creating an individual webpage for each of the units we will be studying.

Understanding Life Systems - Interactions in the Environment
Understanding Matter and Energy - Pure Substances and Mixtures
Understanding Structures and Mechanisms - Form and Function
Understanding Earth and Space Systems - Heat in the Environment

Welcome to Grade 7 Science

Expectations for Grade 7 Science:

• Use safe practises ALL of the time I will provide safety  instructions before experiments. • All work will be kept together, in order, in a science only binder.

• It is your responsibility to complete work that you do not finish in  class. – If I do not state that you have more time, then it is  homework. – You will be asked to hand worksheets in, they need to be  complete on the date due, or marks will be lost.

Expectations for Room 201:

• Always enter the room quietly and look to the Smartboard/Front Board to see  if there are any startup instructions.

• When you sit you should have your science binder, a pencil, and  any other supplies on your desk, ready to begin.

• Sit in the same seat each period we will change when needed/ earned. If you are asked to submit work, you place it in your class In Box with your class code.

• I have supplies you may borrow, pencils, rulers, etc, however you  must return them when done do not rely on this, you should have  your own.

• Do not touch any science equipment unless you are told.

FIRST LESSON:

For your science homework you have two tasks.  The first is to show your parents the science webpage.  The second task is to get a binder and your own lined paper.

FIRST UNIT: Science Introduction and Safety

Science Binder: The following is a list of things that you should have in your science binder for this unit.

Science Title Page

You are required to make a title page for the front of your binder.  The page must have the word "Science" on it, it must have a definition of science and it must include at least four images that relate to science.

Science definition: Knowledge of general facts, laws and relationships that is obtained through systematic observation and experimentation.

You may do this anytime by December 1rst and it is not a part of your assessments.

Definitions Page

SmartBoard / CLASS Notes. In this section you will find information that was shown on the SmartBoard during class.  Keep in mind that each class may have slightly different notes, but the information will be the same overall.
Lesson #1 Introduction

First Quiz on Science Class Safety (September 17th) Please refer to your notes for studying.

The  independent  variable
is the one that
you change or select.

The  dependent  variable
is the one changes as a result,
and that you measure.

The  control  variables must not change, so that it is a fair test.

Second Quiz:
On your quiz you will be asked to explain what an independent variable is, what a dependant variable is and what constant conditions are. You are also to provide an example.

independent variable: the variable that is changed in an investigation (a.k.a cause variable)

dependent variable: the variable that is affected by a change (a.k.a effect variable).  This is the variable that you measure to see how it was affected by the independent variable

constant conditions (controlled variables): all conditions that remain unchanged in an investigation, do not have an effect on the outcome

Example: Investigation to determine if the amount of salt in a solution has an effect on the rusting of metal

Beaker 1:       1% salt
Beaker 2:       5% salt
Beaker 3:       10% salt

-amount of salt in each solution is the independent variable
-amount of rust that develops is the dependent variable
-amount of water in each beaker and amount of time the strips stay in the water are two controlled variables

Assignments.  These are the assignments that have been assigned for this unit. If there is no due date set, you will not submit it, simply complete it and have it in your binder.

In grade 7 science your mark will be composed from three areas, as listed below.

Quizzes

There will be periodic quizzes to review important sub topics.  You will be notified in class as to date and content.

Assignments/Experiments

Throughout the year assignments will be done both in class and as homework.  These are tasks that should not take a large quantity of your time, but are important to have complete.  Not all assignments will be collected right away, however they will be checked for completeness when your science binders are collected.  The information for each assignment will be posted on this webpage.

Tests

At the end of each of our units there will be a unit test.  These test will take multiple periods to write.  However, as was explained to you on the first day, you will have several opportunities to prepare yourself through in class review and extra help time, and you will be fully informed of exactly what is on the test prior to writing it.

Please remember that you will need to keep your science work in your science notebook.  You will need to be sure you complete all of your work, even if it is not assigned a specific due date.  Lastly, you need to constantly show that you use safe science practises while in the classroom in order to be able to perform experiments.
